DCS employees must be appointed with backdated pay – Solidarity

The Constitutional Court in Braamfontein today ruled that the seven employees of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) must be promoted and remunerated retrospectively. This comes after they had earlier been denied promotion on the grounds of the DCS’s Employment Equity Plan.

Solidarity and AfriForum want to put a final stop to quotas in sport

Trade union Solidarity and the civil rights organisation AfriForum this week announced comprehensive legal plans in response to recent statements on quotas in South African sport made by Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula.

In April Mbalula announced that the four main sports governing bodies – Athletics SA, the South African Rugby Union (SARU), Cricket South Africa and Netball South Africa – may not continue to host any major international tournament in South Africa as they have not yet achieved their transformation targets.

According to Solidarity Chief Executive Dr. Dirk Hermann, minister Mbabula’s drastic steps amount to nothing but unfair labour practice.

UN hears complaint on racial discrimination

Solidarity’s complaint of racial discrimination against the South African government will be heard by the United Nations (UN) in August 2016. If you want to involve yourself with the biggest campaign against the unfair implementation of affirmative action in South Africa, this is your chance to do so! One lucky Solidarity member will be able to represent the public in the fight against unfair discrimination at the United Nations in August.

In September last year, Solidarity submitted the complaint in terms of the International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination to the UN in Genève. Read more. Click here.

Sports bodies erected their own gallows

Hangman and judge Mbalula, also known as the Minister of Sport, inflicted punishment on the four biggest sports federations, athletics, netball, rugby and cricket, on 25 April. The privilege to host international sports tournaments was revoked because certain racial quotas had not been attained.

Ironically, he acted in terms of a charter and agreements drawn up by this sector itself (with his sword over their heads).
