Solidarity presence in the SAPS throughout Gauteng
Most of Solidarity’s growth among SAPS members is currently taking place in Gauteng
This growth can be attributed to the enthusiasm of members in Gauteng and the continued success Solidarity is having in litigation involving the SAPS and other departments in the public sector.
For this reason, Solidarity has prioritised the organisation and recruitment of members and structures in Gauteng, and in May and June 2017 several member and recruitment meetings will take place in Gauteng. Members will be kept informed of arrangements.
Numerous working groups have already been established, as follows:
Please contact Renate Barnard by e-mail at renate@solidariteit.co.za, or any of the above-mentioned representatives should you be interested in joining any of these working groups, or if you would like to serve as a representative in your workplace.
Our aim is to identify a “representative” in every police station in Gauteng as soon as possible. Such representative will then be trained by Solidarity to represent members and also to recruit and organise new members.
SAPS Conference
An SAPS Gauteng Conference is being planned for 3 June 2017.
You will soon receive email and mobile communication in this regard.
Please reserve this date so you and your colleagues can attend the conference.
Solidarity wins “point in limine” in arbitration on recognition in the SAPS
As has been previously reported, Solidarity and the South African Police Service (SAPS) started arbitration at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) on 22 February 2017.
POPCRU, supported by the SAPS, SAPU, SSSBC and PSCBC, objected to the arbitration and brought a “point in limine” to stop the arbitration.
The arbitrator, however, on 14 March 2017 decided in favour of Solidarity that the arbitration should proceed and determined 16 May 2017 as the date for arbitration. You may get the full order by visiting Solidarity’s webpage, click here.
As expected, POPCRU meanwhile indicated that they would take the CCMA’s decision on revision to the Labour Court and also requested for the date of 16 May 2017 to be postponed because they would not be available.
Solidarity is of the opinion that the revision application has no merit and that the opposing parties in the matter are simply using delaying tactics.
Solidarity will approach the CCMA to again determine a date to proceed with arbitration.
We once again call on you to convince your colleagues to join Solidarity too.
This email will of course be sent to Solidarity members only – please distribute it among your colleagues who are not yet members of Solidarity.
SMS “SAPS”
Potential members may SMS the word SAPS to 34802 (R1/SMS) and an agent will contact them to join the union, or they may reply by email to sapd@solidariteit.co.za.
Members will be kept informed of developments.
